While the larger student population as well as parents, medical experts, etc. are hoping for the exams to be cancelled, the Supreme Court of India, today adjourned the case seeking cancellation of Class 12 Board Exams 2021 till Monday.

The court asked the petitioner to be optimistic, pointing out the fact that there is no decision taken as yet. The court also asked that the respondents, namely CBSE, CISCE and Centre should also be represented. The matter would next be heard on Monday - May 31, 2021 at 11:00 am.

Though the public interest litigation was filed a few weeks back, due to the vacation and non-availability of CJI, the matter was pending. However, after requests from senior lawyers, the Chief Justice of India has set up three benches to attend to the applications filed under urgency.

Students from across the country are looking at SC as a last resort. Even though CBSE has not announced its decision as yet, it has been accepted by most that the board is planning to conduct the examinations, albeit in a truncated manner in the month of July.

Justice Maheshwari observed that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is likely to take a call on the issue on June 1. The CBSE had on April 14 announced the cancellation of class 10 exams and postponement of class 12 exams in view of the surge in coronavirus cases.
