In a significant development, the Supreme Court has granted permission to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to retrieve data for uploading it onto their official website. This decision, made on March 15, underscores the court's commitment to transparency in electoral processes.
The apex court emphasized the importance of digitizing the documents before uploading them onto the website. It directed the registrar judicial to oversee the scanning and digitization process. Once completed, the original documents will be returned to the ECI. The court has set a deadline for the data to be uploaded, mandating that it must be available on or before March 17.
"The judgment from the Constitution bench made it clear that comprehensive details of electoral bonds, including the purchase date, purchaser's name, and denomination, must be disclosed," stated the Supreme Court.
This development comes on the heels of the Election Commission of India releasing data on electoral bonds received from the State Bank of India (SBI) on March 12. The data provides insights into the entities that have purchased electoral bonds for donating to political parties.
In another pertinent move, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the State Bank of India (SBI) for failing to provide Electoral Bond data with unique identification numbers. SBI has been asked to respond by Monday, March 18, to address this discrepancy.
This decision by the Supreme Court reinforces the imperative of transparency and accountability in the electoral process, ensuring that crucial information regarding electoral bonds is accessible to the public.
