New Delhi: The Supreme Court of the country has taken cognizance itself, expressing deep concern over the plight of migrant workers trapped in lockdown and walking on the roads in the scorching heat. The court has issued a notice to the central government and all the states and union territories, and has ordered a reply on this till Thursday.

The bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MR Shah has taken cognizance of the case on the basis of the reports coming in the media and the letters received by the apex court on the plight of workers. The apex court has said that the workers walking on the streets need assistance to get back to their homes. The central and state governments have inadequate arrangements, for which they will have to answer.

The apex court said that there is a need to take immediate measures to provide free travel, shelter and food to the workers by their central and state governments till they reach home. The Supreme Court said that a coordinated and focused action is necessary to handle such a situation. The top court will hear the case on Thursday.
