New Delhi: The country's largest court has asked the Center to file a status report on the extradition of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya in 6 weeks. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Center, told a bench headed by Justice UU Lalit that some legal proceedings were still pending in the UK, delaying Vijay's extradition.

The Supreme Court has adjourned the case till the third week of January after hearing the case. Justice Lalit, in an order dated 31 August, citing the Foreign Ministry report, said in the court that some legal proceedings in the Mallya case were pending in Britain. Mallya's lawyer was asked to answer this. An IA has been filed by EC Aggarwal, Mallya's lawyer wants to be exempt from the case. Justice Lalit further said that his plea has been turned down and that Aggarwal will remain the advocate for the accused.

Justice Lalit told Mehta, "By when will Mallya's extradition process be completed? Is there a time limit?" Mehta replied that no information about this has yet been received from the Indian High Commission in London. On 6 October, the Ministry of Home Affairs told the top court that the UK Home Office had informed that there was a legal issue in the case, which needed to be resolved before Vijay Mallya's extradition.
