New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard again the demand for a ban on freebies i.e. free schemes. The apex court, while hearing the freebie issue, said that it has to be defined as to what a freebie is. Along with this, we will test how to spend public money. A bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Hima Kohli, while hearing the hearing, asked whether universal health care, access to drinking water, and access to education can be called freebies.

The Supreme Court further said that we need to define what a freebie is. Can we stop farmers from giving fertilisers for free? After this, the CJI ordered all parties to file suggestions in this matter by Saturday evening and adjourned the hearing till Monday. The CJI said during the hearing that he believes that political parties cannot be stopped from making promises. The government's job is to take welfare schemes to the public. The concern here is to spend public money properly.

The Chief Justice said that this matter is very complicated. The question is whether the court is competent to investigate these issues. The CJI said the question is what is a valid promise? Can we say that giving a vehicle for free can be seen as a welfare measure? Can we say that free coaching for education is also freebie? We have to define it. Along with this, the Supreme Court also said during the hearing that we have examples of schemes like MNREGA, which give respectable employment. I don't think such promises affect the outcome of the election. Let us tell you that in a hearing earlier, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana had said that if the Election Commission cannot do anything about the parties distributing free goods, then it should be saved by God. There should be a study on how to do this.
