New Delhi: The country's courts are buried under the burden of lawsuits. The number of pending cases is increasing day by day. The Supreme Court has taken a major step to tackle this challenge. The Supreme Court has set up a special bench to hear the cases of punishment-a-death and tax. The apex court on Saturday i.e. yesterday set up special benches to hear these cases. According to an official source, a bench of three judges will start work from next month to look into the death penalty cases.
According to the source, two courts of two-judge bench will hear cases related to tax. Four new judges in the Supreme Court - Justice Krishna Murari, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, Justice V Ramasubrahmanyam and Justice Hrishikesh Roy - took oath of office on 23 September, taking the total number of judges in the top court to 34.
On September 20, the Supreme Court announced the formation of a single-judge bench to hear bail and anticipatory bail petitions in cases relating to offenses with a provision of sentence of up to seven years, to prevent the increase in the number of pending cases. As per the amended rules, a single judge bench will also hear transfer petitions. Let me tell you that Vice President Venkaiah Naidu had expressed concern about the late hearing in the Supreme Court. He also suggested dividing the SC into four parts.
