Ahmedabad: The convict serving a life sentence in Gujarat's Godhra train incident will come out of jail. After 17 years the apex court granted him bail. The Supreme Court granted him bail saying that he has been in jail for the last 17 years. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha accepted the submission of the lawyer appearing for convict Farooq that he should be granted bail taking into account the period he has already spent in jail.

Let us tell you that the petitions filed against the conviction of several convicts in this case are under consideration in the Supreme Court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, told the court that this was the most heinous crime in which 59 people, including women and children, were burnt alive, and the pleas of the convicts needed to be heard at the earliest. Several others, including Farooq, were convicted for pelting stones at the coach of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra. It was told that at the time of this incident, Farooq used to be the district secretary of the Congress party and by using his political influence, he had mobilized the crowd.

Gujarat government's counsel Tushar Mehta said that stone pelting is generally considered an offense of minor nature, but in this case, the coach of the train was isolated. Stones were pelted at it to ensure that none of the passengers could get out of the burning coach. He further said that in addition to this, fire brigade personnel were also pelted with stones. On 27 February 2002, the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express train was set on fire at Godhra in Gujarat, burning 59 Hindu pilgrims alive, and communal riots spread across the state.
