The petitioner said Priyanka was released two days later even after receiving an urgent release order from the Supreme Court. The apex court has issued contempt notices to the state government and asked it to respond within 4 weeks. Earlier, the apex court had ordered the West Bengal government to release Priyanka Sharma immediately. The court had asked Priyanka Sharma in writing to apologise to CM Mamata Banerjee after her release.

Priyanka Sharma's brother Rajib Sharma, in his petition, had sought intervention from the apex court, terming the 14-day judicial remand as a violation of freedom of expression and sought dismissal of the FIR lodged by the court. In the edited photo, Mamata was portrayed as the look of Actresses Priyanka Chopra at the Met Gala event.
