New Delhi: 17 disqualified MLAs in Karnataka have got a big relief. During the hearing in the Supreme Court yesterday i.e. on Monday, the Election Commission has given relief to all the MLA's. The Commission argued in the court that the order of the former Speaker of Karnataka Assembly cannot prevent the disqualified MLAs from contesting elections. The disqualified legislators have petitioned the apex court to allow the 15 assembly seats in the state to contest as a candidate in the by-election on October 21. The case will be heard on 25 September.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the disqualified MLAs, urged the Supreme Court to either suspend the by-elections in the state or allow these MLAs to contest the by-elections. To this, the counsel for the Commission told a bench of Justices NV Ramana, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Krishna Murari, "I have nothing to say on the disqualification of the MLAs." Actually the case is that the Speaker disqualified the MLAs and due to this the seats are vacant. The election should not be stopped.
