New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a plea seeking a national policy to provide equal compensation to the families of those who lost their lives due to the Coronavirus. A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and Justice RS Reddy dismissed the petition saying that each state has a different policy and they give compensation according to their economic strength.

Advocate Deepak Prakash, appearing for the petitioner Hashik Thaikandi, said that he is only urging for a national policy to be given equal compensation across the country. He said that many people have died due to Corona in India and victims are not getting equal compensation. Prakash said that in some cases, the Delhi government provided a compensation of Rs 1 crore, while some states are paying Rs 1 lakh. There is no uniform policy on compensation.

To this, the Bench said that it was rejecting the petition after which the lawyer requested it to be withdrawn. The petitioner urged the Center as well as the state governments to direct a suitable compensation plan to the families of health workers and essential service personnel who lost their lives due to corona.
