New Delhi: The Supreme Court has categorically refused to set up a panel to probe the recent religious violence in some states. The court has said that it cannot grant such relief. In fact, a petition was filed in the court seeking a judicial inquiry panel headed by the former Chief Justice of India (CJI) to probe the recent religious violence in some states during Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. The apex court had on Tuesday turned down the PIL.
A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and BR Gavai was hearing a PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. Tiwari said the situation is worrisome and only a one-sided investigation is going on. Dismissing the petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, the apex court said, "Do not seek any relief which cannot be granted by this court. '
Justice Rao asked the petitioner's counsel, "Do you want a judicial inquiry by a former Chief Justice of India? Is there a free one? Find out and let us know. Justice Rao said, "What kind of relief are you seeking? Do not ask for relief that the court cannot grant.''
