New Delhi: An NGO had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a probe into the massacre of Kashmiri Hindus by Islamic militants in the 1990s. The petition also sought an SIT probe into the massacre. The matter was heard in the Supreme Court today. The apex court has asked NGO 'We the Citizen' to first approach the central government and other authorities with their plea on the matter. With this, the petition has been withdrawn from the court.
NGO 'We the Citizen' had filed a petition in the apex court seeking the setting up of an SIT to probe the massacre and atrocities committed on Kashmiri Hindus and Sikhs in Kashmir from 1990 to 2003. The petition was filed in the apex court regarding the persecution of Pandits in Kashmir and the rehabilitation of displaced people. It also demanded rehabilitation of the displaced. In October 2017, the apex court dismissed a review petition filed by Roots in Kashmir seeking a probe into 215 incidents of killing of Kashmiri Hindus in 1989-90.
The then CJI Justice Dipak Misra and Justice DY Chandrachud had rejected the review petition after hearing it in-chamber. The apex court had challenged the apex court's July 24, 2017 order in which it had said it cannot order an inquiry into the incident that took place 27 years ago. However, it would be ironic that the Supreme Court had agreed to hear the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, but the 1990 Kashmiri Hindu and Sikh massacre was dismissed as an old case. Hundreds of people were killed, many women were gang-raped and more than 2 lakh Hindus fled the Valley overnight.
