New Delhi: Pakistan's Supreme Court has dealt a major blow to the powerful army for the second time in 4 days. A bench of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed told the army on Tuesday that government land has been given to you for defence purpose. If it is being used for business, it cannot be sanctioned. The Army should return this land to the Government. Four days ago, the Supreme Court had summoned the Defence Secretary to explain in writing why and with whose permission marriage halls and film theatres are being constructed on the land provided for military training.

A bench of Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed is hearing a petition against the undue use of government land by the army. It also includes Justice Qazi Mohammad Amin Ahmed and Justice Ejaz-ul-Ahsan. Defence Secretary Lt Gen Mia Mohammad Hilal appeared before the bench on Tuesday. The bench told him, "You were given government land so that you use it for military purposes." You are building cinema halls, wedding halls, petrol pumps and shopping malls there. What else is this business otherwise?

Then, the Chief Justice said, "Awam respects the army. What message will your actions send? Whether it is Karachi or any other cantonment area, that is what you have done in every place. We have seen your report, we are not at all satisfied with it. On this, the Defence Secretary said, "We want to give you the full report and photos. The Attorney General is preparing it. The report will be placed before you in 4 weeks. The court granted a four-week grace period. Then Justice Amin said, "The job of the army is to protect the country on the borders, you people are doing business openly and you also consider it against pride to take any permission for it. Many of your officers built houses on government land and sold them for lakhs of rupees. You should also submit a report in 4 weeks.
