New Delhi: Professor Shahryar Ali, Head of The Department of History at SRK College, Firozabad, had made indecent remarks on Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani. The matter was heard by the apex court on Friday (July 9, 2021). The Supreme Court said social media cannot be used to defame anyone. The court has not granted relief to the said professor from arrest.

He had made indecent remarks against Smriti Irani on Facebook. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hemant Gupta said that a person can be criticized or ridiculed through social media but the dignity of the language should be taken care of during this period. In fact, Prof. Shahryar Ali had filed a bail plea, which the court rejected and categorically refused to grant him protection from arrest.

The apex court further said, 'You cannot defame women like this. You can't use social media just to defame anyone. What kind of language is being used? There is also a language of criticism or joking. It is not that you say anything.' Shahryar Ali had broken all limits and made obscene remarks on Irani.
