Since its makers announced its release date, the short film Why I Killed Gandhi has been mired in controversy. Earlier, actor Amol Kolhe was criticized for his role of Nathuram Godse, prompting a petition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prohibit the film from being released.

The All India Cine Workers Association had already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that the film Why I Killed Gandhi be banned. On January 30, the short film was released on an OTT platform. The Supreme Court turned down a request for a stay on the film's streaming today, January 31. The petitioner, however, was granted the right to appeal to the Supreme Court under Article 226 of the Constitution.

They should have gone to the High Court first, the court said, rather than going straight to the Supreme Court. Under Article 226 of the Constitution, the High Court has the authority to hear and decide such cases.

The NCP Lok Sabha MP and actor Amol Kolhe has received varied reactions from his party members for his role as Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, in the film Why I Killed Gandhi. The film was made in 2017, however it was first broadcast on Limelight OTT on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary, January 30.
