New Delhi: A petition to declare Ram Sethu a national heritage monument is scheduled to be heard in the Supreme Court on 26 April. This petition has been filed by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy. A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna, and Justice V Ramasubramanian was urged to give directions to the central government in this regard, urging an immediate hearing on it.

According to the media report, the CJI said that a hearing on this may take some time. It would be better to decide the next Chief Justice in this case. Significantly, CJI Bobde is retiring on 23 April. He will be replaced by Justice V Ramana. Earlier, on 23 January 2020, the BJP leader had said in the apex court that Ram Sethu is a matter related to the faith of crores of Hindus. Therefore, it should not be broken, rather it should be declared a national heritage. On this, the court asked the central government to file a reply and consider Swamy's petition after 3 months. But its hearing was delayed due to the crisis that arose due to the Corona epidemic.

There is a long chain of rocks between Rameswaram and the island of Mannar in Sri Lanka on the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu. According to the Ramayana, Ram Sethu was built by Lord Sri Rama with the help of the Vanara Sena to free Mother Sita from the captivity of Ravana. In 2005, the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government announced the Sethusamudram project. Under this, some areas will be deepened to make the movement of sea vessels. For this, it was said to be necessary to break some rocks of Ramsetu. This was opposed by Hindu organizations as well as many environmentalists. Explain that the Congress government had filed an affidavit in the apex court for this project, while rejecting the existence of Ram and insisted on the need to break the Ram Sethu, but the affidavit was withdrawn after heavy furor.
