Sir Surendranath Banerjee was one of the most renowned personalities who is responsible for the empowerment of Indian politics. He was the founder of Indian National Association, the earliest political organization of that era. It later merged with the Indian National Congress owing to their common agenda.

He was born on 10 November 1848 in Calcutta in a Brahmin Family. He has done his graduation from the university of Calcutta. He cracked the Indian civil services in England in 1869 but got dismissed on the grounds that he had misrepresented his age. He once again tried and cleared the exam in year 1871 and was again chucked because of Indian Civil Service exams.

He went to England in 1874 and acquainted himself with the works of liberal philosophers.  He returned to India served as the English professor in a collage.

He launched ‘The Bengali' newspaper and the Indian National Association in 1876 and later merged it with national association and became president of congress in year 1898. In year 1883 he was arrested for the publication of certain controversial statement in the paper. His  arrest was followed by strikes all across Bengal and other parts of India, such as Agra, Pune and Amritsar.

He was the one to support the Morley-Minto reforms and he also opposed to civil disobedience movement. even today he recognised as the one of the first people to work for the political empowerment for India.  He died on 6th August 1925 in West Bengal.
