Suriya's Soorarai Pottru is being made a Hindi remake, and Sudha Kongara, who directed the original, will also be directing the remake. Suriya's production company, 2D Entertainment, is producing the Hindi version. Soon after the formal announcement, the creators were hit with a huge setback when Soorarai Pottru's producer Guneet Monga's production firm filed an injunction suit against the Hindi remake in the Madras High Court.
The matter has now been heard by the Madras High Court, which has decided in favour of Suriya's 2D Entertainment. The court has lifted the injunction against Sikhya Entertainment and ordered that filming on the Hindi remake proceed. Reportedly, Suriya's counsel argued that they have paid a huge amount to Sikhya Entertainment in facilitating the acquisition of rights of the book Simply Fly, on which Soorarai Pottru is based. Soorarai Pottru is a fictionalized version of the life of former Army Captain G. R. Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, a low-cost airline.
Soorarai Pottru is widely regarded as one of India's best films. In Telugu, the film was titled Aakasam Nee Haddu Raa, and in Malayalam and Kannada, it was dubbed Soorarai Pottru. Because of the Covid-19 epidemic, Soorarai Pottru was released only on the OTT platform rather than in theatres. Despite this, Soorarai Pottru has caused a stir, receiving positive reviews from both crowds and critics.Â
The film also got selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards. Recently, Soorarai Pottru won the Best Picture award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2021. Suriya also won the Best Actor for his performance in the film.
