London: Ex UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak is closing the gap to catch up with rival, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss with only five points separating the two in a latest poll of the Conservative Party members on Tuesday, in the race to 10 Downing Street.
Sunak is at 43%, Truss is at 48%, and 9% of respondents to a survey of 807 Conservative members conducted by the Italian public affairs firm Techne for a private client and completed last week are still undecided about who will succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the party and prime minister of the United Kingdom.
The YouGov poll, which was conducted at the conclusion of the knockout rounds last month, revealed that Truss had a 24-point advantage over the 42-year-old British Indian former minister.
Members of the Tory party were surveyed to gauge their opinions of the two finalists' platform proposals. It was discovered that among party members and supporters of the Tories in 2019 Truss, 47, was in the lead over Sunak on the most of concerns.
Sunak, however, had a 10-point advantage over Truss in both being "qualified" to be prime minister (52% to 42%) and being authoritative (51% to 43%).
We haven't really had the impression that Liz is faring as well as the polls have indicated. Everywhere he visits, he receives excellent comments, and a lot of people are still deciding, according to a Sunak campaign source said. The source adds, "Liz's support feels really soft."
