New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) today protested against 'Surya Namaskar'. A letter issued by the Secretary, Muslim Personal Law Board said that muslim students should avoid participating in such programmes from the central government's proposed programme of Surya Namaskar.

The Muslim Personal Law Board has opposed the government's directive to organise 'Surya Namaskar' programmes in schools between January 1 and January 7, the 75th anniversary of Independence Day. The board has said that 'Surya Namaskar' is a form of Sun Worship and Islam does not allow it. In fact, the government has directed that 'Surya Namaskar' be conducted in schools from January 1 to 7 to mark the 75th anniversary of Independence. In his statement against 'Surya Namaskar', Hazrat Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, General Secretary, AIMPLB, said that India is a secular, multi-religious and multi-cultural country, based on these principles, our Constitution has been written, instructions have been issued to take care of it in school curriculum and incursinuation.

Board General Secretary Saifullah Rahmani said the present government is deviating from the principle of the Constitution and trying to impose the thinking and tradition of the majority sect. The Ministry of Education, Secretary, Government of India has decided to run a 'Surya Namaskar' project in 30 states on the 75th Independence Day, which plans to cover 30,000 schools. AIMPLB said against the government order that 'Surya Namaskar' is a way of worshipping the sun, with Islam and other minorities in the country neither treating the sun as a deity nor considering its worship appropriate. Therefore, it is the duty of the government to withdraw such instructions and respect the secular spirit of the country.
