Sherman Ali was in the custody of the Chief Ministers' Special Vigilance Cell on charges of being linked to the MLA fund embezzlement crime. He was arrested by the Vigilance Cell for misappropriating and stealing money from the MLA fund. He was produced before the Gauhati High Court for hearing the case and then sentenced to five days' custody under the CM Vigilance Cell. But when the Vigilance Cell informed the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (CJM) that Sherman Ali no longer needed his custody, he was sentenced to judicial custody.
