It hasn't been an easy return to court after becoming a mother for two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Elina Svitolina, as she suffered a three-set first-round defeat at the Charleston Open.
Former world number three player but currently ranked 1081, Svitolina has lost 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4 to Yulia Putintseva in a match that lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes. Svitolina has said, 'It was not easy for me physically. I have to say that I have not done my best, but I am getting close.'
Svitolina and her husband, tennis player Gael Monfils, became parents to a daughter in October last year. In other matches of the day, 2017 US Open champion Saloni Stephens beat qualifier Louisa Chirico 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, while 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova beat Jill Teichmann 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Anna Kalinskaya beat Annakhalina Kalinina 7-6(6), 6-4, and qualifier Catherine Sebov beat Lauren Davis 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
