Swami Vivekananda: The world is the gymnasium of character formation

To believe that we have improved the world is a mistake. This idea gives rise to suffering. When we help someone, we expect him to say thank you in return, so when he doesn't, we are disappointed. Why should we anticipate anything in return for our actions?

It is neither good nor bad in the world. Every man builds a world just for himself. Depending on our mental state, we perceive the world as either good or bad. Fire by itself has no good or bad qualities. We praise it when it keeps us warm and criticize it when our fingers burn. The state of the world is the same. The entire world exists by itself. Perfect simply means that it can achieve all of its goals. We should be aware that the world will continue to be happy even without us. We don't have to wonder how to assist him. However, we should never stop doing good deeds.

The best motivation to perform acts of charity is the constant awareness that doing so is a privilege. Don't say, "O beggar, take; I give this to you," while perched on the high seat of a benefactor holding two pence in your hand. Be thankful to yourself for having the chance to show kindness in this world and finding fulfillment as a result. The giver is blessed, not the recipient. All acts of goodness contribute to our purity and perfection. Neither your nor my assistance is necessary in this world. However, we should continue our charitable work and continuous labor. Because it is solely for our benefit. We can only reach completeness by doing this. Giving to the poor makes us feel as though we owe them something because they gave us the chance to show them our kindness.

To believe that we have improved the world is a mistake. This idea gives rise to suffering. When we assist someone, we expect him to thank us in return, so when he doesn't, we are disappointed. Why should we anticipate anything in exchange for our actions? Instead, we ought to think of the person we assist as Narayan and be grateful to him. Is it not a great blessing that we can worship God with the aid of mankind? Why should we have this anticipatory suffering if we are truly unattached? Being impartial, we can happily make the world a better place.

Unhappiness or disruption will never result from detached action. Only if we are able to act without attachment will we be able to transcend prejudice and dogma. Only then will you be able to work effectively because you will have transcended bigotry. The only person who can perform acts of kindness in the world and thereby benefit themselves is one who is level-headed and calm, who acts after carefully considering their options, whose nerves do not become easily agitated, and who is full of love and sympathy. Can do. This world serves as a massive character-building gym. Each of us must engage in this form of practice in order to continue building our spiritual strength. Any form of bigotry should be avoided because it is the antithesis of love. Our ability to love others and perform honorable work increases with our ability to remain calm under pressure.
