S.W.A.T., an American procedural action drama television series, has been a fan favourite since its debut in 2017. The Shemar Moore starrer, based on the 1975 show and the 2003 film of the same name, was cancelled by CBS ahead of the season six finale, much to the disappointment of netizens. But fans need not worry since their passion may have brought their favourite programme back.
After the 2017 series was announced to be cancelled before of its season six finale, CBS has officially renewed S.W.A.T. for a season seven. A new streaming agreement made the popular series available on Netflix, propelling S.W.A.T. to the eighth spot on the Nielsen streaming rankings with over 625 million minutes viewed. CBS reversed its decision due to an increase in viewers and public outrage at the cancellation.
In order to "give closure" to the show's plots and characters, S.W.A.T. was revived for a seventh and final season of 13 episodes. According to the official announcement, CBS "listened to their viewers and their outpouring of passion" for the hit series. After its first five seasons were made available on Netflix, S.W.A.T. became the streaming service's number one series. While supporters were pleased to see another season, they were disappointed that it was the final one or that the episodes had been reduced from 22 to 13.
The final season of S.W.A.T. has no official release date, but the renewal announcement stated that it will air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year. According to the series' premise, "in his hometown of Los Angeles, a sergeant is tasked with leading an elite team of officers and defusing deadly tensions in his community." Shemar Moore plays Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, a native of Los Angeles and the head of the LAPD's Special Weapons and Tactics branch.
