New Delhi: Justice DY Chandrachud, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India today. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to the 50th Chief Justice of India at the President's House. Let us tell you that it was here that DY Chandrachud's father was the Chief Justice of India for about seven years and four months. It's also a record. Yes, this is the longest tenure of a CJI in the history of the apex court.

He was the Chief Justice of India from February 22, 1978, to July 11, 1985. Talking about Justice Chandrachud, he will hold this post for two years till November 10, 2024. In fact, supreme court judges retire at the age of 65. He will succeed CJI Uday Umesh Lalit, who had recommended him as his successor on October 11. President Draupadi Murmu appointed him the next CJI on October 17.

He was elevated as a judge of the Apex Court on May 13, 2016. Justice Chandrachud has been part of several Constitution benches and supreme court benches that delivered landmark judgments. Yes and these include the Ayodhya land dispute, decriminalising same-sex relationships under Section 377 of the IPC, matters related to the validity of the Aadhaar scheme, the Sabarimala issue, granting permanent commission to women officers in the Army, and permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Navy.
