A new study has found that long Covid patients are susceptible to developing only seven health symptoms for up to a year following the infection.
Fast-beating heart, hair loss, exhaustion, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, joint pain, and obesity are the seven symptoms, according to a group of US researchers from the University of Missouri (MU), who made these surprising findings and reported in the Open Forum Infectious Diseases journal.
We only discovered a small number of symptoms that were specifically linked to an infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, despite the overwhelming number of long Covid symptoms that had previously been reported by other studies, according to Chi-Ren Shyu, director of the MU Institute for Data Science and Informatics and the study's corresponding author.
The researchers examined actual data from electronic medical records that had been de-identified for research reasons before drawing their conclusions.
The researchers chose the top 47 most often reported health problems from extended Covid to explore for this study after looking at data from a total of 52,461 patients at 122 healthcare facilities across the US.Then, the researchers investigated for any comparisons in the reported health symptoms among patients in three separate categories, many of which were also shared by other viral respiratory illnesses.
Persons with Covid who do not also have common viral respiratory illnesses like the flu or pneumonia, people with common viral respiratory infections but not Covid, and people without Covid or any other common viral respiratory infections were included in these groupings.
