TAIPEI: On Friday, HS Prannoy withdrew from the tournament after losing in the men's singles quarterfinals, putting an end to India's participation in the Taipei Open 2023.

Prannoy, who was ranked ninth in the world for badminton, was defeated in the quarterfinals by Hong Kong's world No. 16 Ng Ka Long Angus, 19-21, 8-21.

The third-seeded Prannoy swiftly got his footing while competing at the Tian-Mu Arena and quickly built a 5-2 lead. Ng Ka Long Angus, though, fought back to tie the score at five. Both shuttlers fought for the advantage as the game went on. Ng Ka Long Angus won two straight points after the scores were level at 19 all to seize the lead.

Prannoy was down 8-2 at the halfway point of the second game. The Indian shuttler was unable to match Ng Ka Long Angus' level of energy, and Ng Ka Long Angus maintained control. In 38 minutes, the Hong Kong shuttler finished the game.

In 12 meetings, Prannoy has lost six times to Ng Ka Long Angus. Prannoy defeated Ng Ka Long Angus 21-18, 21-16 in their previous encounter to get to the Indonesian Open 2023 semifinals.

Tanya Hemanth earlier on Thursday ended India's run in the women's singles pre-quarterfinals by losing to world No. 4 and silver medalist Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.

The next match at the Canada Open will feature the Indian shuttlers. Calgary will host the BWF Super 500 competition from July 4 to July 9.
