Taiwan has reported detecting 20 Chinese military aircraft around its territory on Wednesday. These aircraft were seen flying in the north, center, and southwest regions of Taiwan as part of a "joint combat readiness patrol."

According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, "Overall 20 PLA [People's Liberation Army] aircraft in various types (including Su-30, KJ-500, etc.) were detected from 1250hr today. Out of which, 14 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the northern, central, and southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ)." The ministry noted that China was conducting "air-sea joint training along with other PLAN vessels." They added that the #ROCArmedForces have been monitoring the situation and responding appropriately.

A senior security official stated that Taiwan is on high alert for Chinese military drills near the island as National Day approaches, following observations of "some maritime deployments." Taiwan's National Day is celebrated annually on October 10. In a message on X, Taiwan's defense minister expressed confidence, saying, "Tomorrow is our National Day. The unwavering resolve and commitment of the #ROCArmedForces to safeguard the nation’s territory and sovereignty will never waver. No matter what threats or challenges arise, we stand strong!"

Additionally, Taiwan's coast guard announced the seizure of a Chinese fishing boat and its nine crew members, who were found within the island's restricted waters. This incident occurred near Qimei Island, part of the Taipei-administered Penghu archipelago, situated in the sensitive strait that separates Taiwan from China.

Since splitting from China at the end of a civil war in 1949, Taiwan has been regarded by Beijing as part of its territory, which must be reunified, potentially by force. Relations between Taiwan and China have worsened in recent years, with Beijing maintaining a near-daily military presence around Taiwan. In the last two years, China has conducted three significant rounds of military exercises, deploying aircraft and ships to encircle the island.
