New Delhi: The Chinese embassy in India has issued a statement concerning an interview conducted by an Indian media channel with Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, alleging that the interview "provided a platform for him to advocate 'Taiwan independence'." In response, Taipei asserted that both India and Taiwan are democracies with robust and independent media.

It's worth noting that India adheres to the 'One China policy' regarding Taiwan and does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taipei. The statement from the Chinese embassy stated: "On 29th February 2024, certain Indian TV channels broadcasted an interview with the head of Taiwan's foreign affairs office Joseph Wu, which provided a platform for him to advocate 'Taiwan independence' and disseminate false information. It seriously violated the one-China principle and is totally unacceptable."

The "One-China principle" was defined in the statement as follows: "There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China."

Responding to this, Taiwan's foreign ministry stated, "Neither India nor Taiwan is part of the PRC [People's Republic of China], and we're not its puppets. We're both democracies with free and vibrant presses that can't be dictated to."

Taipei urged Beijing to focus on addressing its "economic slump, not bullying its neighbors".
