Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath invoked the Hindu 'exodus' from Kairana a few years ago on Monday, telling residents in the western Uttar Pradesh town that those who shoot at traders now will be sent to the "next world."

‘All those who support the Talibani mindset in the state will be dealt with strictly by the Uttar Pradesh government," the Chief Minister said at a rally in Kairana, Shamli district. The Talibani mentality should not be tolerated. This is something that should not be tolerated. Those who support it are dragging society back to the Stone Age.

Citizens' basic rights are being violated by this mindset. Talibanism is the mindset of those who blindly follow their religious beliefs. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated." He also attacked the opposition, claiming that they did nothing when Hindu homes were set on fire and innocent youths were killed in Muzaffarnagar during communal riots in 2013.

The alleged exodus from Kairana was a major talking point during the 2017 State Assembly elections, with the BJP claiming that scores of Hindu families had fled the town after receiving threats from criminals. Yogi Adityanath paid a visit to the town ahead of next year's Assembly elections, promising compensation to some families who were allegedly forced to leave between 2014 and 2016.
