KABUL: The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan welcomed the extension of the UN mission in the war-torn country for another year on Saturday.

"The extension of the UN operation in Afghanistan is in Afghanistan's interest, which we support," Zabihullah Mujahid, the senior government spokesperson, said in a statement, as per report. The UN Security Council approved a resolution on Thursday to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until March 17, 2023.

"We hope that the international world will expand and formalise relations with the Islamic Emirate through the UN, as well as support and assist the people of Afghanistan in humanitarian, medical, and construction areas," Mujahid stated.

Since the Taliban took over in August of last year, the country's economic position has deteriorated, with increasing unemployment and rising poverty, while isolated attacks persist.
