CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu school education department will soon appoint coordinators for extending the free breakfast scheme across primary schools in the state.

As per officials from the school education department, a coordinator will be appointed for each educational district in Tamil Nadu

The scheme, a centrepiece of the DMK administration led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, will be managed by district education officers (elementary).

The department has urged teachers and school administrators to participate in the plan that ensures breakfast is supplied to all primary school children in the state and has requested information regarding the number of students in each primary school.

The  scheme is expected to help 18 lakh students and 30,122 primary schools in the state. In its most recent budget, the state government set out Rs 500 crores for the project.

Notably, Chief Minister Stalin had launched the free breakfast programme for elementary school pupils at Adhimoolam Primary School in Madurai on September 14, 2022.

At a cost of Rs 33.56 crore, the programme was introduced in 1,545 elementary schools throughout the state, benefiting 1.14 lakh pupils in the initial phase.

The government has allocated Rs 500 crore to expand this project across the state in all government primary schools as a result of the first phase of the program's success.
