Chennai: The first transgender panchayat secretary has been appointed in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. In 2015, Santhanaraj left the post and underwent a gender change. After living as a man, he changed his name to Dakshinayani. He had filed a petition with the government to quit his job, saying he would have to move away from home due to physical and mental changes.

Tiruvallur district collector Albie John on Friday reinstated the 30-year-old trans woman saying they understand gender sensitivity. He said it was a decision in the right direction. This will increase people's understanding of this matter. John further said, "She was absent for a long time due to physical and mental challenges related to sex transformation. We hope this will prove to be a small step towards creating a more gender-sensitive society. This will inspire more transgender people to take up jobs in the government and private sectors. '

In 2010, Dakshinayani became the secretary of the Koduveli panchayat in the Ellapuram block of Tiruvallur district, when she was 19 years old. She worked for five years and then one day ran away from her home and job. He said, "I had no freedom. I hid my identity for the honour of my family. Dakshinayani joined the transgender community members. She underwent a gender change at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai in 2017. After that, he started travelling with his community. Before coming back to Chennai in 2019, he did a lot of work in temples and also learnt astrology. During this time, she stayed in Mumbai and Nepal.
