Chennai: Tamil Nadu Congress leader Karti Chidambaram came out in support of DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin after the latter made controversial comments about Sanatan Dharma. Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks had sparked a debate. Karti Chidambaram criticized Sanatan Dharma, stating, "Sanatan Dharma is nothing but code for a Caste Hierarchical Society. All those batting for it are hankering for the Good Ole Days! Caste is the Curse of India." His comments were critical of the Hindu civilizational religious philosophy.

In a subsequent tweet, Karti Chidambaram defended Udhayanidhi Stalin, clarifying, "There was no call for 'Genocide' against anyone; this is a mischievous spin." He continued, "In the common parlance of TN, 'Sanatan Dharm' means Caste Hierarchical Society. Why is it that everyone who is batting for 'SD' comes from the privileged segment who are beneficiaries of the 'Hierarchy'?" Udhayanidhi Stalin had earlier stated, "Mosquitoes, dengue, flu, malaria, corona – we should not oppose these things. They've to be eradicated completely." He likened this approach to his perspective on Sanatan Dharma, saying, "The same is the case with Sanatanam (Hinduism). Our first work should be to abolish/eradicate Sanatanam instead of opposing it."

Taking to social media, Udhayanidhi Stalin further criticized the Hindu civilizational religious philosophy, stating, "Sanatan Dharma is a principle that divides people in the name of caste and religion. Uprooting Sanatan Dharma is upholding humanity and human equality... I spoke on behalf of the oppressed & marginalized, who suffer due to the Sanatan Dharma." His comments sparked a debate on the issue.
