Chennai: The body of an elephant was rocked by a meeting in a village under Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Monday. Police said that forest department officials who rushed to the spot noticed that both the teeth of the wild elephant were missing.
Police suspected that the poachers may have killed the elephant to get teeth. The forest department has formed special teams to investigate further to ascertain the cause of death. Forest department officials said they are yet to ascertain whether the poachers have killed the elephant for the tooth or that someone has removed the teeth from the dead elephant.
Forest department employees on Sunday recovered the body of an elephant near The Mawadappu tribal settlement under the Udumalpet division of ATR. Forest department sources said the body had started rotting. The elephant reportedly died a few days ago. According to the information, the cause of elephant death can be ascertained only after postmortem.
