CHENNAI: In a significant move to combat illiteracy, the Tamil Nadu government has designated July 15 as Education Development Day in honor of the birth anniversary of the esteemed former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.
Starting from this academic year (2023-24), all schools will be adorned to commemorate this day, with students in their uniforms embellishing the school premises and paying homage to the revered leader by offering floral tributes to his photograph.
In an official directive, the state education department has mandated that motivational speeches be delivered in schools, accompanied by various activities such as essay writing, painting, and poetry competitions among the students. To foster the spirit of education championed by Kamaraj, prizes will also be awarded to encourage participation and excellence.
It is worth noting that K. Kamaraj, also known as Kamarajar, served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from April 13, 1954, to October 2, 1963. He earned the moniker of "kingMaker" due to his influential role in Indian politics.
Furthermore, he held the presidency of the Indian National Congress for four years, from 1964 to 1967, and played a pivotal role in facilitating Lal Bahadur Shastri's ascension to the position of Prime Minister following the demise of Jawaharlal Nehru.
