The Tamil Nadu State Government has formed a panel to formulate the state's education policy. M K Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, made the announcement on Tuesday, April 6, 2022. Former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, D Murugesan, has convened a Tamil Nadu Education Panel to draught a new State Education Policy.

The panel was constituted after a similar promise was made in the state budget for 2021-22 about the formation of a group to create a state education policy. The state government stated in the 2021-22 budget that an expert group will be formed to draught the SEP in accordance with Tamil Nadu's ancient culture, existing position, and future goals.

Former Chief Justice of India D Murugesan will lead the State Education Policy (SEP) panel. The panel consists of 13 experts, including the former Chief Justice of the United States.

The formation of a panel for SEP follows the announcement by the Central Government of the National Education Policy, NEP 2020. Tamil Nadu has announced its opposition to NEP 2020 since 2020, and will now endeavour to develop its own State Education Policy.

Tamil Nadu is also opposed to the idea of a four-year degree programme with multiple entry and departure points because they feel it will increase the number of dropouts and create two categories of graduates.
