CHENNAI: Taking a proactive stance against soaring prices, the Tamil Nadu government has launched a new initiative to sell tomatoes at subsidized rates through the Public Distribution System (PDS) outlets.

To alleviate the burden on consumers, tomatoes will now be available at a discounted price of Rs 60 per kilogram in 82 designated PDS shops. This move comes as a relief since tomatoes are currently being sold at exorbitant rates of Rs 120-140 per kilogram across the state.

In an effort to ensure fair distribution, the state's Civil Supplies Department has imposed a limit of 1 kilogram per person for tomato purchases through the ration shops. Earlier reports hinted at the state's plan to implement tomato sales through this channel.

Under the guidance of Tamil Nadu's Minister for Cooperatives, S. Periyakaruppan, a meeting was held at the state secretariat to outline the key aspects of this initiative. The Minister emphasized that should tomato prices continue to rise, the state government will take further measures to procure additional produce and sell it at reduced prices, thus safeguarding the interests of consumers.

In addition to the ration shops, farm fresh outlets have also been authorized to sell tomatoes as part of this endeavor. By expanding the sales network, the government aims to provide greater accessibility and affordability to its citizens.
