Chennai: A case of harassment of two transgenders has come to light in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. A video of two youths has surfaced in which they are holding two transgenders, beating them up and forcibly cutting their hair. Police said the youths have been identified as Yowa Buban and Vijay. Both these accused have been arrested by the Kalugumalai police on charges of torture. On Thursday, when this video came out, the police have taken action on these two youths.
The video clearly shows a young man making a video and two transgenders sitting on the ground. A man is cutting the hair of one of them transgender. Marks of assault are also visible on their faces. The video was shared by transgender activist Grace Banu on social media who posted the video demanding action from the police in the matter. After the video went viral, the police swung into action and arrested the two accused.
The two accused have been booked by the police on charges of torture, abuse and assault. Apart from these, a case has also been registered under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019 of the IPC. Tuticorin Superintendent of Police L Balaji Saravana said, "We have identified the victims of the accused seen in this video. We are taking strict legal action in this matter.''
