Chennai: Former PM Rajiv Gandhi's assassin A G Perarivalan was on Wednesday released from jail by the top court. On the one hand, there is a lot of controversy over the court's decision, while after the order, celebrations are being held in Jolarpettai city of Tamil Nadu. Perarivalan's family lives here, who are extremely happy to hear the news of his release. Perarivalan, who himself is out on bail, has also heaved a sigh of relief on being released.
The Congress and the BJP may have opposed it, but both the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK in Tamil Nadu did not oppose it. Congress has even announced protests against the decision. Congress state unit president S Alagiri said he did not want to criticise the Supreme Court's verdict but would say that they (all the seven convicts) were murderers and not innocent. After the order of Perarivalan's release was being celebrated in his city. Laddoos were distributed there. At the same time, Perarivalan also played Parai (a kind of drum).
Perarivalan had also met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin after the release order. Perarivalan's mother was also with him during this time. Stalin later said that the demand for the release of the seven convicts was in his manifesto. The AIADMK, however, says Perarivalan's release was due to the efforts of former chief minister Jayalalithaa.
