Ritual: On the eve of this day a plate is arranged with mango, banana, jackfruit, betel nut, betel nut, gold coins, silver coins, money, flowers and a mirror. After waking up on this day, one has to see this plate early in the morning. It is said that this ritual is known as Kanni, the ritual of Kanni brings happiness and prosperity in the new year. The entrance of the house is decorated with elaborate kolam or rangoli. The middle of the kolam is decorated with 'kuhutvillakku', which is the symbol of a lamp. People take bath early in the morning and offer Pongal to the gods.

People wear new clothes on this day. They also visit temples to seek the blessings of God. Young family members and children receive gifts or money from the elders of Puthandu. It is said that the day of Puthandu is very auspicious for the Brahmin feast. The head priest also studies the panchangam. Many families perform 'Tharpanam' in the memory of their ancestors on this day on Puthandu. A car festival is organized on the occasion of Puthandu at Tiruvidimarudur near Kumbakonam and in Madurai, a huge exhibition is held at the Meenakshi Amman temple by the name of Chitai Porutachaichi.
