Telangana govt receives notice from NHRC over botched-up eye surgeries

Hyderabad; a notice has been issued by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to the Telangana government over recent botched cataract surgeries at the government-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital (SDEH), nearly two weeks after it resulted in vision loss in one eye for nine patients.

The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report on the goof-up by the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital.

As per the reports the saline solution, administered during the operations, was infected with bacteria due to which seven people lost their eyesight after cataract surgery in Hyderabad.

The NHRC said, in a statement, that the contents of the news item indicated a violation of right to health of the patients.

Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the State Chief Secretary and Director General of Police.

A case under section 338 of the IPC is reported to have been registered against the hospital.
