HYDERABAD: The government of Telangana on Monday, September 12,  sounded an alert in the districts on the banks of Godavari river in the light of flood threat.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) instructed Chief Secretary (CS) Somesh Kumar to alert the Collectors and Superintendents of Police of all the districts of the Godavari catchment locality including Kothagudem and Mulugu.

Following heavy rain in the upper riparian region, the flood flow of Godavari is increasing steadily and is crossing 9 lakh cusecs, said the Chief Minister's Office. The Chief Minister gave instructions to the staff to quickly set up a control room in the secretariat and periodically check the situation.

Projects across Godavari were getting  massive inflows.

To release water downstream, the 35 crest gates of Sri Ram Sagar have been opened by the authorities. At Sri Ram Sagar, the flood discharge is 2.06 lakh cusecs. As many as 85 gates of Yellampalli reservoir have been opened to let out 6.7 lakh cusecs. Medigadda's flood discharge is 8.2 lakh cusecs.

This is the second time in two months that the Godavari is suffering floods. Crops had suffered extensive damage in July as a result of unprecedented floods. In parts of Telangana, the last three to four days of nonstop rain have caused havoc. The ongoing rains have caused some cities and villages to flood. Villages in some of the districts were cut off because the roads were flooded.

The disruption of normal living in north Telangana regions was caused by severe downpour. Road traffic was negatively impacted. National Highway 23 in the Mancherial district was completely buried because of an overflowing creek, which stopped all vehicular movement.

In the Nirmal district, a tree fell on a car, killing two people and injuring one.  The district of Allapalli Bhadradri Kothagudem had the most precipitation (35.1 cm) during the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to officials, this is the third highest rainfall in 115 years. The previous maximum rainfall was 35.5 cm on October 6, in the year 1983 in Nizamabad. On June 17, 1996, Koheda in the Nizamabad district received 67.5 cm of rain.
