HYDERABAD: Telangana was taken aback by the Union Budget 2022-23, which dismissed all of the state's requests for increased funding and new projects. The pledges made to the state under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 were also not mentioned in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's budget speech.
The state had great expectations for the budget and had requested Rs 60,000 crore in funding for several projects. It was for this reason that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao reacted angrily to the budget, calling it 'golmal' and 'useless.' The Centre has once again snubbed Telangana's long-standing desire for national status for either the Kaleshwaram or Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation projects.
Telangana will receive Rs 17,165 crore as its share of central taxes in 2022-23, according to budget estimates. This is Rs 3,175.85 crore more than the budget forecasts for 2021-22, as well as Rs 1,240.14 crore more than the revised estimates.
However, other from the state's share of central taxes, funding for local bodies as recommended by the Finance Commission, and allocation for centrally sponsored initiatives, there was no allocation to the state. With the Centre slashing MGNREGS allocations by Rs 25,000 crore throughout the country, the flow of funding to states under the rural job guarantee plan is likely to suffer.
