The problem of spam calls and messages is increasing day by day in the country. Despite the efforts of TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), this problem does not seem to be decreasing. A recent survey has revealed that about 95% of Indians are disturbed by unwanted calls and messages every day. These cases have increased significantly in the last six months. Along with this, the DND (Do Not Disturb) feature present in the phone is also not proving helpful in stopping this problem.

survey results

A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles revealed that 95% of Indian mobile users are facing spam calls daily. Scammers are now adopting new methods to cheat people. According to the survey, 77% of mobile users receive spam calls at least three times a day. These calls are mostly related to home loans, credit cards and financial sector. In the last six months, such cases have increased from 54% to 66%.

Effect of DND feature

The Do Not Disturb (DND) feature provided by smartphone and telecom companies is also not showing any significant effect in stopping spam calls and messages. This feature is no longer proving to be as effective for people as it used to be earlier. Scammers are now trying to cheat people by adopting new methods, due to which the usefulness of the DND feature has reduced.

Concrete steps by TRAI

TRAI recently issued instructions to solve this problem. A deadline of September 1, 2024 was set to stop promotional messages, which has now been extended to October 1, 2024. TRAI plans to control fake and spam calls soon. TRAI has also said that if an entity misuses its SIP/PRI lines, all its telecom resources will be disconnected by its telecom service provider (TSP). Apart from this, that entity will also be blacklisted.

Solution to the problem

TRAI and telecom companies will have to work together to solve the problem of spam calls and messages. This problem will not be solved only by rules and instructions; technical improvements and strict monitoring are also needed for this. If this is done, then in the future the problem of spam calls and messages can be reduced, and people can get relief from this trouble.
