Beijing: To tighten the noose on China, it has also been decided to further tighten the rules for solar panels. The government is also planning to register domestically manufactured solar panels made of cells, wafers and polysilicon under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) in three to four years. Union Energy Minister RK Singh has asked officials of his ministry to prepare a policy in this regard.

The government had launched ALMM to promote domestic manufacturing of solar panels. Singh has said that modules with low efficiency are removed from ALMM. We are going to develop our policies. We are going to protect only those modules which are cells made in India. We are going to come up with such a policy in a year or two. After one to two years, we will bring a policy that wafers and polysilicon should also be made in India.

Promotion of Make in India: The Union Minister has said that this step will help in furthering the goal of Make in India. The government is not going to promote imports of solar panels components in the next few years. You import a cell from outside and assemble it here. Then they sell it saying that it is made in India, whereas it is 90 percent made in China. This will not work anymore. The ministry will also review the ALMM next year. The Government is not going to allow manufacturers to support any old equipment or technology to protect the interests of the people of India.
