The Indian women's hockey team advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIH Junior World Cup with a 2-1 win over Germany in the pool stage match here on Sunday. The Indian team, which defeated Wales 5-1 in their opening match of Group D on Saturday, upset Germany in this match. Lalremsiami (2nd minute) and Mumtaz Khan (25th) came out as winners for the team through conversion of penalty corners. Germany's lone goal was scored by Joule Bleuel in the 57th minute. The Indian team is going to be seen playing the last match of the pool stage against Malaysia on April 5, first from the quarter-final stage starting from April 8. Indian team is currently at the top of Pool D with 2 wins in two matches while Germany's team has come second in this table.
Two teams from each pool are going to qualify for the quarter finals. The Indian team also got a penalty corner in the second minute against Germany. Dipika's drag flick was saved by Germany goalkeeper Mali Wichmann but Lalremsiami scored on the rebound to give the team the lead. After this, Germany continued to put pressure on the Indian defense and got several penalty corners but they failed to penetrate the promptness of goalkeeper Beechu Devi Karibam. He also made a brilliant defense of Jett Fleischchutz's penalty stroke in the second quarter.
After which the Indians, mostly on the basis of counter-attacks, got two consecutive penalty corners, out of which Mumtaz scored the second penalty corner in the 25th minute to double the team's lead. After trailing by 2 goals, the German team continued the attack but they did not succeed in penetrating the Indian defence. The Indian team raised the level of their game even more in the fourth quarter. The team has not been able to score goals despite reaching Germany's circle several times. Germany got the team back in the match three minutes before the end of the match, Bleuel scored a reverse shot and scored a brilliant field goal, but it did not prove much. India has participated in this competition 4 times, in which the Bronze medal in 2013 is its best performance.
