The iPhone 16 Launch: No AI Yet, But Big Changes Are Coming

Apple has officially launched its iPhone 16 lineup in nearly 60 countries, including India. However, the highly anticipated AI software, Apple Intelligence, is missing from the new devices and will require future downloads. The iPhones come with only modest upgrades, with the most notable feature being a new touch-sensitive Camera Control button.

Despite the absence of the AI features at launch, analysts are optimistic about Apple’s growth during the holiday season, predicting an 8% revenue increase for the December quarter. The iPhone 16 lineup includes two standard models—iPhone 16 and 16 Plus—along with the premium Pro and Pro Max versions. Preorders started last week, and shipments to customers and stores have begun.

While there are no massive crowds at Apple stores, some dedicated fans have been spotted lining up for the new models. The iPhone 16 will initially run iOS 18, but Apple Intelligence will be available as part of an iOS 18.1 update in October. Apple introduced its Intelligence software at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June and has since been testing it in beta with developers. The full suite of features will be released in stages, stretching into next year.

The new iPhone design is similar to the iPhone 12 from 2020, but with improved battery life and camera capabilities. Prices start at $799 for the base model and go up to $1,199 for the Pro Max. While shipping delays have been a problem in previous years, this time around, Apple seems to have enough stock, with deliveries of the standard models expected by early October and Pro versions by mid-October.

In addition to the iPhone, Apple has launched new AirPods and watches. The AirPods 4 come in two versions, priced at $129 and $179, with noise cancellation reserved for the higher-end model. The Apple Watch Series 10 features a larger display and a thinner design, while the Ultra model now has a black color option.

Apple is also preparing for the release of new Mac products later this year, including a major overhaul of the Mac mini and updated MacBook Pro laptops featuring the AI-focused M4 processor.
