The month of January is named after Janus, the Roman God of beginnings. He was symbolized as a man with two faces, one face looking back and the other looking ahead. In other words, he looks both towards the future and the past at the same time. One face looks back to the year departed, and one looks forward to the New Year ahead.

Sometimes we have trouble looking ahead with hope because we keep looking back and moping over the mistakes of the past. Our outlook for the future is dimmed, and our enthusiasm is dampened. But there is no use “crying over spilled milk.” History is likely to repeat itself if we keep on brooding over failures of the old year, or continue complaining about grieves we suffered during the last twelve months. Nothing is gained by continually lamenting over the past.

So often we enter a new year with hopes, desires, and resolutions that can be the seeds of positive change. But the key to what actually happens in our lives is in making definite plans. That involves thought, purpose, and sustained effort.

As 2022 finally over, all of us are looking forward to 2013 as a fresh start. Do we have a New Year’s resolution or goal for the New Year? Did we have to put off our 2022 goals. How we plan to achieve them different than what we might have done in the past? How have our goals for the future changed in our “new normal”? The time is ripe now - let’s talk to ourselves about it!

On this day early in the New Year, we can be free from old patterns and failures, by making right what needs correcting, and forgetting those things which are behind. Let go of the past knowing we have learned all the lessons necessary to move forward. This structured look at the broken loop of the past can now set us free to learn and release it from our future.
