The Supreme Court of India Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Central Government to issue instructions to the states for payment of salaries to doctors. The court has also asked the centre to issue instructions to provide necessary quarantine facilities to doctors and health workers engaged in the treatment of patients infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, SK Kaul and MR Shah said that the doctors and health workers treating the patients of Corona should not be denied quarantine facilities. The Supreme Court asked the Center to file a compliance report on the payment of salaries and quarantine facilities to doctors and health workers within four weeks and warned that non-compliance would be viewed seriously. Also, the bench was hearing a petition filed by a private doctor. The petition's May 15 decision was questioned in this petition. According to this decision of the Center, 14-day quarantine was not mandatory for doctors. Dr Arushi Jain has filed this petition.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Center during the hearing, said that within 24 hours the government will issue instructions to the states and union territories to ensure timely salary to doctors and health care workers. He said that the circular of 15 May on Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will also be revised. Mehta also assured that a new order would be issued to provide suitable alternative accommodation for doctors and healthcare workers on duty to treat patients with coronavirus to avoid exposure to their family members. He said that hospitals are also thinking about declaring non-payment of salaries to health workers as punishable offences under the National Disaster Management Act. The bench said that necessary instructions should be issued by the Union Health Secretary and the Chief Secretaries of the state.
